Tony Varney PGA Golf Professional

Our PGA Golf Professional, Tony Varney provides one-to-one coaching to both members and non-members at Mattishall Golf Club.  Tony has also established our popular class programme for beginners, ladies and juniors.

Tony’s tuition is ideal for those wanting to brush-up on their golfing techniques as well as those new to the sport, wanting to start from scratch.  Tony’s lessons are tailored specifically to the player, taking into account previous experience and their long term aims.

Tony joined Mattishall Golf Club early 2018, when Debbie took over the running of the club.  Tony has been on-hand, not only proving coaching to members, guests and visitors, he has also advised on course design.  Tony has established a number of classes at the club, which are proving very popular.

Tony’s golf biography

Tony is a local lad, who started playing golf at 14 years when his father introduced him to the game, playing at Dereham Golf Club.  His hours of practice and dedication to the sport resulting in him reducing his handicap form 28 to 5 by the age of 16. Tony represented the Norfolk Country Boys team on many occasions, including qualifying for the ‘National Boys Golf Championship’ final in Spain.  Tony’s love of the game resulted in him gaining an Apprenticeship at Dereham as Golf Assistant, which allowed him to join the PGA and start his career of golf professional at Rookery Park Gold Club in Lowestoft.

Tony became a Fully Qualified PGA Golf Professional after four years of training and passing his PGA exams with flying colours.  This resulted in him joining Wensum valley Golf Club as head professional in 1997. During his time at Wensum Valley, he enjoyed many playing successes in and around Norfolk, Suffolk, including the Norfolk PGA Order of Merit on three occasions.  Tony moved to be head professional at The Norfolk Golf & Country Club at Raymerston until its closure in 2011. Tony continued to successfully compete in a number of competitions; winning the Norfolk Open three years running, won the Norfolk Professional Championship, as well as winning the Norfolk & Suffolk Millennium trophy on three occasions.  Tony also became the coach for the Norfolk Boys Country squad.

Following the closure of The Norfolk Golf & Country Club, Tony moved to the Norwich Family Golf Centre, where he continues to coach today.  Tony has, as well as being the appointed country boys squad coach, has also been appointed as coach to the country girls and country girls ‘Talent Program’.
